This Venetian Schiavona has a blade crafted from high carbon steel; the elaborate basket hilt is fashioned from blued steel and the cats-head pommel is of brass. A quadrangular and stout wooden grip is overlaid in stitched leather.

The sword comes with a wooden scabbard which is bound in form-fitted and tightly stitched red leather with a brass tip. Leather sword hangers are fitted onto the scabbard and their integrated brass buckles can be used to adjust then height and angle of the sword scabbard when slung from a sword belt. An adjustable sword belt with an antiqued brass buckle is included.

The Venetian Schiavona is a distinctive type of sword that was popular in Italy, particularly in the Veneto region (including Venice) during the 16th and 17th centuries. The name "Schiavona" comes from the Italian word "Schiavo," meaning "slave," which refers to the sword’s origins among the Slavic mercenaries and soldiers (primarily from the Balkans) who served in Venetian military and naval forces.

Cultural and Symbolic Significance

  • Symbol of Status: In addition to being a weapon, the Venetian Schiavona was often a symbol of status among Venetian nobility and soldiers. Its distinctive design and craftsmanship made it a prized possession.
  • Artisan Craftsmanship: These swords were often beautifully decorated, with finely crafted hilts and blades that could be adorned with engravings or gold inlay, making them works of art as well as weapons.
